North-east community enterprise ready for new year
Historic buildings in Portsoy that have been given a new lease of life by the community are getting set for a busy 2024.
The Category B listed Sail Loft Bunkhouse properties are recognised to be of regional importance by Historic Scotland and comprises a former sail making loft, a Georgian house and two cottages, all dating back to the 1700s.
Situated on Back Green, it was previously an industrial site used for manufacturing thread for flax, which was then exported to Nottingham and Leicester.
Today, The Sail Loft provides accommodation for people to enjoy a range of pursuits on land and sea.
Located on Links Bay, The Sail Loft Bunkhouse is run by Portsoy Community Enterprise and is a four-star VisitScotland rated, self-catering facility with 25 beds and bunks.
It has an open plan kitchen and lounge, with a log burning stove.
There are toilet and shower facilities, along with a laundry, drying room, secure cycle storage and wash down area.
It is near Portsoy’s 17th century harbour, which has been preserved to tell the story of the north-east’s maritime heritage.
It will play host to the 2024 Scottish Traditional Boat Festival where a flotilla of heritage vessels from across the UK will drop anchor for a weekend of entertainment including live music, Scottish food and drink and unique crafts and handmade items. It takes place on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23.
