Customers at independent optometrist and hearing care specialist Duncan and Todd Group will be treated to a sweeter than usual eye test this weekend, when the optician celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Branches across the country, including in the north-east at Elgin, Banff, Ellon, Fraserburgh, Banchory, Aberdeen and Stonehaven, as well as the original store in Peterhead, will host a series of celebratory birthday parties on August 26-27, to mark the golden milestone.

Duncan and Todd Group was founded in 1972 by Norman Duncan and Stewart Todd, who opened their first branch in Peterhead with the aim of providing a professional local eye care service.

Now led by managing director Frances Rus, the group has expanded significantly over the years and is now Scotland’s largest privately-owned optician and hearing care provider.

With more than 40 branches all over Scotland, Duncan and Todd trades as 20 20 Opticians south of Tayside and as Duncan and Todd in the north, as well as retaining names which are well known locally, such as JM MacDonald in the Highlands.

The group also operates a state-of-the-art laboratory, Caledonian Optical, which provides lenses to all Duncan and Todd optical branches, as well as more than 200 clients across the UK.

Duncan and Todd has also invested widely in hearing care and has fully integrated this service across Scotland, with free hearing tests, earwax removal and supply, fitting and tuning of a comprehensive range of hearing aids, including digital aids.

Branches will be hosting celebrations over the weekend and customers will be encouraged to join in the fun, with refreshments and prizes on offer.

Mrs Rus said: “Reaching our 50th birthday is a huge milestone and Duncan and Todd Group is almost unrecognisable from the early days with just one branch in Peterhead.

“However, the values that we held at that time still exist today and we pride ourselves on providing a personalised, quality service in high streets of towns and cities across the country.

“We are looking forward to celebrating with our loyal and valued customers this weekend and sharing our birthday cake and special treats with them as a thank you for their continued support.”
