North-east urged to Light Up Blue for World Parkinson's Day
PARKINSON’S UK is calling for buildings all over the north-east to ‘Light Up Blue’ to mark World Parkinson’s Day.
With the special day fast approaching, the charity is keen to see as many people as possible get involved to help raise awareness of Parkinson’s.
The disease is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, affecting an estimated 12,500 people in Scotland.
Communities across the nation are busy preparing for the annual event, which falls on Tuesday, April 11, with numerous landmarks, community centres and homes set to light up blue for World Parksinson’s Day.
Edinburgh Castle and the Kelpies are among some of the iconic landmarks that have been illuminated in the past, with the venues confirmed this year so far including St Andrew's University and Camera Obscura.
Karen Mcconnell, who volunteers for Parkinson’s UK, is driving the ‘Light Up Blue’ campaign in Scotland.
She said: “Seeing buildings across Scotland lit up blue is a really powerful and positive way to raise awareness of Parkinson’s.
"We’re delighted and grateful for every venue that has signed up this year for World Parkinson’s Day.
“But we are always keen to see even more communities take part and there is still time to get involved. Buildings like theatres, halls, churches and museums can be lit up, also monuments, bridges, homes and business premises. It would be brilliant to see the whole of Scotland represented!”
