Closure of construction sites across Scotland means the new Linkwood Primary School in Elgin will not open in August as planned.

Pupils due to attend the new Linkwood Primary will instead be accommodated in the annexe at East End Primary from the start of the new school year until further notice.

Several delays have seen the originally intended June 2018 completion date for Linkwood Primary come and go.

The cost of the project has also risen from £12million to £12.8million.

However, since finally being able to get under way in March 2019, building work had been progressing steadily until the beginning of the coronavirus crisis in March

A council spokesperson said: "No nursery provision will be available at Linkwood from August.

Families who had selected Linkwood nursery for their child’s early learning and childcare setting have been asked to make an alternative first choice.

Families of children with additional support needs will be contacted individually to discuss the best options."

Chair of Moray Council’s Children and Young People’s Services Committee, Sonya Warren, said: "Although I know the Linkwood school community will be disappointed to see the completion of the new school delayed, once we are given instruction that construction sites can re-open, we’ll work with our contractors to recommence building as quickly and safely as possible."

Work has also stopped on site at the new Lossiemouth High School.

The council says families of secondary school pupils will be informed directly of any change in timescales as a result of the temporary closure.
