The Northern Scot understands that the rodents were found within the female surgical ward (Ward 5) of the hospital.

However, the health board insists the situation is being dealt with and that there have been no further reports of rodents in recent weeks.

Alastair Pattinson, hospital manager, said: “We had reports of mice at the beginning of March and notified pest control experts immediately.

“They are continuing to monitor the situation, but there have been no reports of rodents in recent weeks.

“Dealing with pests of all kinds is a regular part of our building management, particularly in our older building, and we have a well established process to deal with these issues.

“We are confident there is no ongoing risk to either patients or staff."

The health board has also confirmed that some issues have been detected with the hospital’s new Clinical Skills Centre’s water supply.

The new centre, based within the hospital’s revamped former Ward 10, is a dedicated environment for learning and development for both students and members of staff. It was opened on March 27.

However, routine testing revealed some issues with the centre’s water quality just days after it was officially opened.

Mr Pattinson added: “Routine water testing detected some issues with water quality in the Clinical Skills Centre.

“Filters have been fitted to those taps affected and we will be monitoring the situation.

“There is no risk to staff safety and the centre continues to operate as normal.

“There is no risk to patients as this is not a patient area.”
