Prince Philip was quite a regular visitor to these parts during his lifetime.

A search through the archives has uncovered photos from several official engagements over the years.

Stretching as far back as 1961, they also cover the Prince's most recent visit to Gordonstoun, his old school, for its 80th anniversary celebrations in 2014.

The 1961 visit took place on Monday, August 14.

Over the course of eight hours, the Royal couple undertook a 120-mile tour of the region.

Travelling in a dark crimson Rolls Royce with a perspex roof, they made a total of 14 stops, which included Banff, Elgin, Forres, Nairn, and Grantown-on Spey.

And thousands turned out to see them.

Writing at the time about the visit, the paper stated: "As to be expected in so tight a schedule there were delays as they frequently slowed down en route to allow those standing in groups throughout the countryside to catch a glimpse.

"Two unscheduled visits were also added to the programme.

"The first, at the Queen's express wish, was to Whitehills in Banffshire, which had been left off the official route.

"Then, at Fochabers, there was a surprise visit to the home of Helen, Duchess of Northumberland.

"Informally, the Queen and Duke strolled down a quiet backwater to the house, much to the delight of Mrs Rigby, who, too frail to make the journey to the Square, was standing in her doorway and had a grandstand view of the visitors."
