THOUSANDS came on Wednesday evening to celebrate what’s considered in Burghead to be the real start of the New Year.

The Burning of the Clavie has been held on January 11 since well before records began.

Centuries-old and possibly pagan in origin, the night has a magic all of its own.

The Clavie Crew carried around a burning whisky barrel on their shoulders, handing out smoldering stakes which are said to bring good luck for the coming year.

Grant and Evelyn Cormie were amongst those given a stake. The owners of the former Harbour Inn, which is now a B&B, the couple have long been supporters of the Clavie.

Grant said: “It’s good luck guaranteed throughout 2023. We are going to win the lottery twice and Rangers will triumph in the Champions League.”

Another recipient was Hilary Gloyer whose daughter, son-in-law and grand-daughter were visiting.

A village resident for nearly eight decades, Hilary said: “It’s just brilliant to be back to normal again.

"It’s a really good turnout for a Wednesday night. There are so many people in Burghead tonight. It’s wonderful.”
