CROWDS gathered in their numbers for the switching on of Elgin's Christmas lights on Saturday.

The lights were switched on at 4.30pm by local school pupil Faith Wells while crowds enjoyed a packed day of entertainment during the all day event.

Santa and his reindeer made an appearance at 2pm before the lights were switched on and a variety of stalls and activities ensured there was plenty to see and do for locals enjoying the festivities.

Elgin BID, which organised the event, said it was the "busiest" Light Switch On they have ever held.

"The Christmas Light Switch On was the busiest Light Switch On we have ever held," a spokeperson for Elgin BID said.

"The crowds came out in droves to witness the Reindeer Parade, stage entertainment, visit our local businesses and of course watch the Christmas Lights being turned on.

"There was a consistently amazing atmosphere from 10am when the event started right through to nearly 6pm.

"Seeing so many people come out to enjoy the event was a real bright spot in what has been a difficult year for so many.

"We hope that everyone that attended the event really enjoyed themselves and remember that the best way to spread Christmas cheer is to shop local somewhere near.”
