Pictures: Elgin Academy teachers dress up as Willy Wonka, 101 Dalmatians and more for World Book Day

TEACHERS at Elgin Academy donned costumes inspired by beloved book characters to celebrate World Book Day.

There were events and activities taking place across the school to mark the day, including a Drop Everything and Read session for pupils in S1-3, which saw pupils reading in science and on exercise machines in P.E.

During lunch the school also had a staff panel, where pupils and staff guessed which books each other were reading, pupils also decorated biscuits with book covers and titles before eating them.

School librarian Shelagh Toonen said: "It is important to celebrate the power of books and the joy of reading. We are a reading school so it's great to get the whole school involved. The way staff have embraced it has just been fantastic."

Along with dressing up, staff also changed their department names to book titles to coincide with their characters and were encouraged to talk to pupils about their books and characters.

Ms Toonen added: "The kids have been really engaged with it, pupils have just loved seeing staff up for it and talking to them about books. Reading for young people is a huge indicator of success in later life so that's why we do Book Day, to hopefully engage pupils, parents and staff."
