PUPILS at Aberlour Primary School and Burghead Primary School were treated to special visits from loveable Road Safety Scotland character Ziggy, reminding them of the importance of staying safe on our roads.

At the schools, Ziggy was welcomed by children and teachers at playtime, before settling down for a storytelling session to read about the popular alien’s adventures while learning about road safety on Earth.

Sam Filer, teacher at Aberlour Primary School said: “Having Ziggy join us today was just brilliant and a great way to reinforce the road safety messages we’ve been teaching our children in class. We’ll enjoy reading the Ziggy stories together even more after today’s special visit!”

Martin Collins, Acting Head teacher at Burghead Primary School said: "We love using the Ziggy road safety resources in the classroom and everyone was so excited to welcome Ziggy to our school – it was a really fun way to remind children how to stay safe on the roads."

The visits from Ziggy were competition prizes, which were won by the schools as part of the ongoing ‘Go Safe with Ziggy’ campaign. There have been several children's books, games and games released featuring the character, which helps equip children and parents with the skills, knowledge and attitudes that will help keep children safe on our roads now and in later life.

Debbie Nicol, Road Safety Scotland Assistant Director, said: “It is important that children are immersed in positive road safety attitudes from a young age, both in the classroom and at home.

“We know that early experiences shape children’s future behaviour, reiterating the importance of practising and teaching safe road habits.

“Ziggy is a fun character with an important message and visits like these help create lasting memories about road safety.”
