OLDER people in Moray have tackled a new sport as part of a national drive which is opening up new activities.

Coach Phillip Cutts from Quasar Hockey Club in Elgin led an introduction to Walking Hockey at Hanover Housing's Linkwood complex in Elgin.

Participant learned a little of the history of hockey, basics of stick and ball control and tactics. The session ended with a few fun matches, which were followed by light refreshments.

Brian Dyke, from Elgin, said: "It was a real eye opener – I’d never played hockey before, but I really enjoyed the experience."

The free class was part of First Time for Everything, a programme designed by Royal Voluntary Service and Prudential to give older people an opportunity to try something new for free in their local community. Staying active and social has been proven to be important to keeping fit and well in older age.

Ian Menzies, RVS activity co-ordinator for Moray, said: "It’s been wonderful to see so many local people enjoying our First Time for Everything activities.

"Thanks to funding from Prudential, we have lots more exciting events coming up and hope that even more older people, their carers and families will come along.

"It’s never too late to try something for the first time.”

The next event in Moray will be Therapets – pet therapy on Tuesday, September 3 at 2pm at Hanover Housing, Linkwood View complex, Thornhill Drive, Elgin.

Meanwhile, an appeal has been sounded for more volunteers to help RVS run First Time for Everything events and other social activities.

Mr Menzies said: "For anyone with a few hours to spare, volunteering is a great way to get involved in the local community.

"Our volunteers are a wonderful bunch of people – many are aged 60 and over - and they really enjoy the buzz they get from helping others."
