A pair of teenage boys have been charged by police following a tip off about suspected salmon poaching on the River Spey.

The force said that the possible incident took place near Craigellachie at about 5pm on Saturday, July 24.

The boys, who are aged 14 and 16, will be reported through the appropriate youth justice process.

As part of Operation Wingspan a total of six people have been charged with poaching offences in the North East this month.

The other alleged incident concerned a group who were allegedly fishing without permission at the River Deveron at around 8.50pm on Monday, July 5.

Enquiries led to four men being traced and charged. A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

PC Hannah Haywood, the North East’s wildlife crime liaison officer, said: "Fish poaching can be highly damaging and impact Scotland’s vulnerable fish stocks.

"Anyone with any concerns around wildlife crime in their area is asked to report it to officers."
