He said: "I commend Moray MP Douglas Ross for resigning from the Scotland Office and UK Government in response to the issues relating to Boris Johnson’s chief adviser Dominic Cumming’s decision to travel when his family should have been self-isolating due to Covid-19 symptoms.

"This will have been a difficult decision for Douglas. I know that we have both been contacted by many constituents angry with the whole affair and how it’s been handled."

The SNP leader at Westminster, Ian Blackford said: "This will have been a difficult decision to make and I respect Douglas Ross for taking it. This issue transcends politics.

"It is about protecting trust and confidence in the public health advice. The Prime Minister must remove Dominic Cummings from his post without further delay."

Scottish Liberal Democrat Jamie Stone said he was "Desperately sorry to see Douglas Ross go.

"We belong to different parties, but he a man of great integrity - something that his resignation only underlines."

The Conservative MSP for Glasgow, Adam Tomkins, tweeted: "To lose @Douglas4Moray from Government is a disaster. His was one of clearest voices for the Union in Government. It shows exactly why Cummings should be sacked. I suspect others will follow where Douglas has led."
