Elgin will be given £20million to regenerate the town centre, Rishi Sunak has announced.

The prime minister said the 10-year deal would put 'funding in the hands of local people' to improve communities.

Elgin is included in 55 towns across the UK set to share £1.1billion from the levelling up fund which must be spent over a decade.

However, political opposition has branded the move as a political ploy and 'bribery' before the general election.

Conservative MP for Moray, Douglas Ross welcomed the news, saying: "Delighted that on the first day of the Conservative Party Conference 2023, the UK Government has announced £20 million for Elgin town centre over the next 10 years.

"While the SNP continue to hollow out our local services, it’s welcome that the Conservatives are focused on people’s real priorities."
