AN Elgin councillor has welcomed figures showing less than one per cent of Moray Council-owned properties were reported for having damp or mould last year.

Cllr Jérémie Fernandes said that the figures were "reassuring" after they showed that 59 properties were reported in 2022, down from 81 the previous year.

The figures, revealed by a Freedom of Information request, were taken from 2007 to 2022 with 2016 seeing a peak for cases of mould or damp after 140 properties were reported.

It was also revealed that Moray Council spent £21,636 last year to treat mould and carried out 102 work orders.

Cllr Jérémie Fernandes says the figures are "reassuring" but added that council tenants should report mould or damp as soon as possible.
Cllr Jérémie Fernandes says the figures are "reassuring" but added that council tenants should report mould or damp as soon as possible.

Cllr Fernandes said: "Following the tragic death of Awaab Ishaak in November caused by mould exposure in his house in Rochdale, it is understandable that council tenants are concerned by mould and damp in their properties.

"Moray Council owns 6297 properties for social rent, so it is reassuring that only 59 - less than one per cent - were reported to have damp and mould in 2022.

"Officers have been proactive in treating mould in the council’s housing stock, and have increased spending to remedy the issue.

"However, prolonged exposure to mould can cause serious adverse health effects like respiratory infections, asthma and allergies.

"I encourage all council tenants to report damp issues as soon as they arise."
