In just three weeks, the fund set up to help people facing financial hardship due to the coronavirus has attracted great support.

A £25,000 donation from drinks firm Pernod Ricard saw the fund swell to £97,000.

The Lord Lieutenant of Moray, Major General Seymour Monro, said he and his Banffshire counterpart Andy Simpson had been overwhelmed by the reaction.

He said: "The total is fantastic and it is quite amazing to nearly reach £100,000 in under three weeks. It is quite outstanding and says a lot about the generosity of businesses and the people of Moray."

The fund has had 90 applications for help and so far has distributed £9,700 in cash grants to around 40 people.

It is also working with Moray Council to source computers and printers for people looking to home school children.

Mr Monro said the fund is trying to turn around applications inside 48 hours.

Donation and application forms are in the print version of The Northern, Banffshire Advertiser, Banffshire Herald, Banffshire Journal and the Forres Gazette, and can also be downloaded at www.moray.gov.uk
