As has become tradition across the United Kingdom, a clap took place at 8pm – giving residents a moment to thank those looking after them.

Anderson's Care Home manager Kathy McGrath-Gunn said the residents were thanking all those on the front line in the battle with coronavirus, and paid tribute to her own hard-working staff.

"We are all part of this dreadful thing we are going through," Kathy said. "The residents were thanking the NHS, their carers and every single member of staff.

"It was for every single department – catering, house keeping, laundry, maintenance. We are busy and it's very stressful but all of our staff have been amazing.

"The clap is a moment for reflection and gratefulness. Without all these wonderful people, where would we be?

"The residents really enjoyed it and it was a beautiful evening."

One resident in particular went above and beyond this week, surprising staff members with gold and silver medals. The woman said it was the least they deserved for their hard work.

The moving tribute sums up the connection Anderson's have with their residents, Kathy added.

"It's those little gestures that mean so much. The residents inspire us all – they haven't seen relatives for weeks but continue to keep staff upbeat.

"We just want to do our best and make sure it's not just about care, but also fun and laughter.

"We are just hoping all residents and staff stay healthy and well, and we have been pretty lucky so far."

Kathy also thanked the local community, who she says have overwhelmed the home with their generosity.

She added: "It is incredible what people out in the community are are doing to help organisations like ourselves.

"The amount of people phoning up has been overwhelming. It hasn't always been the easiest to get PPE and we are so grateful for all donations."

Anderson's has five individual units, Ethan, Morris, Munro, Ogilvie and Harrison houses. The homes are not currently mixing and observed last night's clap in their home groups.

Of the home's 110 staff, just a couple are off sick at the moment.
