Ross ousts Robertson in Moray election win

THE Conservative Party's Douglas Ross has recorded a huge upset in Moray, ousting the SNP’s Angus Robertson after his 16 years as the area’s MP.

Mr Robertson, who was the SNP’s deputy leader and leader in the House of Commons, received 18,478 votes compared to Mr Ross’ 22,637.
On an evening in which both the Conservative and Labour parties have been making gains against the SNP across Scotland, the Moray result promised to be one of the most significant in the country.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Ross said: “I want to give my heartfelt thanks to the people of this constituency who have put their trust in me to be their member of parliament.
“My first and only priority will be serve all of the people of this constituency to the best of my ability.”
Many of the nation’s media descended on Elgin Town Hall for the count, which has for a number of years been considered a safe seat for the SNP.
The turnout in Moray was 67.5 per cent, down slightly from the 68.8 per cent of 2015. A total of 47,666 votes were cast.
