A WELL-KNOWN Rothes face has retired after running Costcutter in the village for more than half a century.

Cathie Longmore moved to Rothes in 1970, aged 40, and began working in the high street shop.

Now aged 92, Cathie has decided it's time to call it a day and has sold the shop, which is set to become a Keystore.

"I have loved working in the shop and never grudged being in there," Cathie said.

"I loved helping customers that needed help – there are some that have been coming since I arrived.

"There are so many good memories, too many to mention. I'll miss the customers and the fun.

"It's time to retire as my sight is going a bit, but I think the shop will be in good hands.

"Here's hoping it will continue to be an important shop for Rothes."

Cathie has made quite an impact on Rothes during her 52-year spell in the town, with her dedication being recognised with a BEM in 2020.

She received the honour on the Queen's Birthday for her care in the community and encouraging tourism.

That care was appreciated locally – as Cathie found out on Tuesday, November 1, when she was left speechless by a presentation at the Church Hall in Rothes.

Former customers and staff members alike chipped in to put on a coffee morning, as well as buying her flowers, vouchers and cushions.

"I got the shock of my life," Cathie said.

"They collected a lot of money and people that worked for me and customers got together.

"There were home bakes, homemade sandwiches – I think they collected around the whole of Rothes.

"I got Rothes tartan cushions, a lot of flowers and cards, and I even got a voucher from the day centre across the road.

"It was so unexpected and lovely. I keep thinking about, I really couldn't believe it."

After retiring, Cathie is now going to live with her daughter near Duffus.

"But any chance I get, I'll be in up in Rothes, I assure you!" she added.
