SAMARITANS Scotland has launched a free self-help app to encourage people to show kindness to themselves and look after their emotional wellbeing.

Kindness was announced as the new theme for Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs until Sunday, May 24.

Released earlier than planned in response to the coronavirus outbreak, the Samaritans Self-Help app offers practical ways to help people cope and stay safe if they’re going through a difficult time.

Rachel Cackett, Samaritans Scotland executive director, said: "With access to face-to-face support services and networks limited, digital resources like this have a vital role to play in supporting mental wellbeing.

"Our new self-help tool provides another channel of support for anyone who may be struggling, featuring practical, evidence-based techniques and exercises."

The web app features a mood tracker that allows the user to record how they feel, and recommends evidence-based coping techniques and activities such as muscle relaxation, breathing and written exercises.

It offers a range of techniques for coping with difficult feelings, as well as suggestions for non-screen activities that can be built into daily routines.

It is hoped the app will be a valuable help to those observing social distancing, facing prolonged isolation or lacking the privacy to make a call to the helpline.
