SCOTLAND women's football captain will kick off the annual Diageo sportMoray Recognition Awards next month.

As well as heading the national team, Aberdeen-born Rachel Corsie plays for Utah Royals in the American National Women’s Soccer League and has played spells with English and Australian clubs.

Moray Council educational resources manager Kim Paterson said securing Rachel as guest speaker was a huge coup for the awards.

She said: "Women’s football has witnessed a big upsurge following the televised World Cup in 2019, and it is fantastic that Moray’s sporting community will hear Rachel talk about her amazing journey.

"Nominations for the awards are open until November 6, so people should get voting for our rising stars and dedicated sports supporters in all categories.

"Only by nominating someone or being nominated can you be at this event, so that’s a big incentive to submit a form."

The event will take place on November 27 at Elgin Town Hall.

The 13 award categories open for nominations include local service to sport, junior athlete, intermediate sportswoman, intermediate sportsman, senior sports athlete, veteran sports athlete, coach, club level, school sport volunteer, intermediate team, senior team, special achievement, community engagement and sports personality of the year.

Nomination forms can be submitted online at www.sportinmoray.co.uk. Paper copies can be ordered by emailing sports.development@moray.gov.uk or by calling 01343 563374.

The organisers thanked this year's award sponsors, which include the Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils, Moray Trophies Ltd, Springfield Properties PLC, the Northern Scot, Gordon and MacPhail, Diageo, NHS Grampian, Moray Council, Elgin Rotary Club, Active Schools, Moray College UHI, Forsyths Ltd, and Campbell and McConnachie Chartered Financial Planners.
