The accolade was jointly presented to June Buchan and Emma McLauchlan at the Moray and Banffshire Heroes awards, which took place at the Banff Springs Hotel.

Accepting their awards on stage, both paid a warm tribute to their fellow staff members at Elgin High and to the pupils.

Speaking again shortly afterwards, June said: “It's the most bizarre thing in the world. We had absolutely no idea who nominated us.”

Emma added: “We just do what we do to make sure the kids come out the other end as the best version of themselves.

“It's not a two-person job. It's the work of 50, 60, 70 staff members This award is for Elgin High School.

Both agreed that there are a “fab” bunch of kids at Elgin High.

June said: “They're all unique. All funny. All different.”

Emma added: “That's what gets us out of bed every morning – to find something new to motivate them and engage them.”

The Secondary Teacher of the Year category was sponsored by the housebuilders Barratt.

Elgin High was well represented at the awards ceremony last Thursday evening.

In addition to June and Emma’s award, one of its pupils – 18-year-old Abbie Howie – was named Secondary Pupil of the Year.
