SIX coronavirus-related deaths have been recorded in Moray from a total of 36 cases of the disease, new figures show.

The National Records of Scotland is now releasing covid-19 data by local authority, as well as by health board.

Figures show Moray (which has a population of 95,500) has less deaths and less cases of coronavirus than any other mainland constituency, with 36 confirmed cases and six deaths as of 2pm today.

That is nearly three times less, on both counts, than any other mainland area. Two of Moray's deaths took place in hospital, with four at home.

Neighbouring Aberdeenshire (pop: 261,500) has seen 75 deaths from 318 confirmed cases of covid-19, while Aberdeen City (pop: 227,500) has seen 48 deaths from 448 cases.

Highland, meanwhile, has 125 positive cases and 30 deaths (population 235,500).

Scotland-wide, 2272 people have died due to coronavirus, according to NRS figures. That includes all deaths where coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate, even if they person hadn't tested positive for the disease.

A total of 1415 people have tested positive for the virus and died within 28 days. This is the number shown in the daily update provided by the Scottish Government.

NHS Grampian are keen to ensure that people in Moray do not relax having seen the relatively low number of cases in their area.

A spokesperson said: "It is really important that we keep a close eye on the the local data coming through and how we interpret it.

"Things move so quickly, but the message remains the same: we all have a duty to adhere to the guidelines and keep everyone safe.

"We want people not to become complacent during this time.

"It is so important to keep up the good work in our communities. Thank you to the people of Moray."

Guidance remains to Stay Home, Protect the NHS and Save Lives.
