A PIECE of Burghead's history will be on display at the village's community hall this weekend.

Hazel Grant, from the village, has organised the second running of Cythie Memorabilia after the great success of her first event in summer.

The free-to-enter exhibition will take place on Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19 from 10am until 4pm both days.

It will showcase the lives of the MacKenzie family, who stayed at 21 Brander Street, with photos, cuttings and keepsakes.

Displays will be varied in their nature and will include everything from Clavie photos going back to 1932, to old football tickets and even shrapnel from a WWII plane.

Hazel wants to give a glimpse into her family's lives – and show what life in Burghead has been like through the years.

"With grandparents, uncles and aunties they were a family with nine – with five sons," Hazel said.

"My father was the only one that married and the rest lived bachelor lifestyles, travelling the world and amassing items of interest.

"It's a funny collection of stuff. There is everything from shrapnel from the first plane went down in World War II in Orkney, pictures of Japanese prisoners of war and a Scotland-England football match ticket from 1936.

"The family kept everything. It knocks people back in time when they see these things – and it's all there to be handled. There are Clavie photos going back to 1932, all in folders."

A recording from Hazel's uncle Dave, dating back to the 1970s, when he explained his childhood in the village, is available to listen to.

Cythie Memorabilia picked up its name from the name of Hazel's auntie's home, where all of the items were stored – and where Hazel now lives.

The event will see photo albums and folders with paper cuttings set out around Burghead Community Hall.

It is the long-awaited follow up to an event that Hazel ran in summer – which she said was very popular.

"It was wonderful," she said. "I only put it on for a couple of hours, but everyone that attended said that it wasn't long enough and they are delighted it is coming back.

"There was nobody that went away disappointed. One lady found a photo of her parents together and said she had never seen them pictured together before – she was moved to tears.

"Lots of people have been stopping me in the street to ask if I'm doing it again and this is it. There will be different things that got overlooked last time too.

"It's so nice to stand back and watch people looking at things and getting pleasure from it."

The Community Hall committee are putting on rolls from 10am until 12pm on the Saturday. Teas and coffees will be available all weekend.
