The local SNP group is claiming Moray Council's convener has "done the right thing" by resigning.

Marc Macrae announced earlier today that he stepping down from the post to which he was appointed in May.

The move has pre-empted a no confidence vote in him that would otherwise have been considered at a council meeting next Wednesday.

Graham Leadbitter, the SNP group's co-leader, said: "I am pleased that the convener has done the right thing and resigned.

"However his claims that allegations against him are ‘unfounded’ give rise to more questions than answers.

"The past behaviour issues that led to the no confidence motion are true and certainly not ‘unfounded’.

"It may be that he is referring to other allegations but if he wants to set the record straight he should set out in detail the events he accepts did happen and the consequences of those events.

"He should also set out what he considers to be unfounded.

"The statement issued today by the Conservatives deflects from the fundamental concern that cllr Macrae should never have been appointed to the position of convener with the past behaviour he has exhibited."

It's understood that in an incident three years ago cllr Macrae used swear words when complaining about a council employee to his line manager.

He later issued a statement apologising for his actions and saying he was not proud of them.

Earlier today the Conservative group stated that the police had been asked to investigate whether allegations made by a former councillor against cllr Macrae amounted to harassment.
