THE SNP candidate in the Buckie by-election has underlined his commitment to fight for a new high school for Buckie if elected.

John Stuart's vow comes as Moray Council officers have recommended a new school for Forres be prioritised ahead of Buckie Community High School. Hopes had previously been high that it would be BCHS that would be given the nod.

Mr Stuart said: “It’s a huge blow that Moray Council officers have recommended that Buckie High School should not be given priority in the next round of funding application to the Scottish Government.

"I know staff, parents and pupils all have concerns about the condition of Buckie High and a new school is a big priority for the community. As a parent of a child who will be entering high school in a few years, I absolutely share local concerns.

"I am very aware that, if elected, my first meeting will be to decide the prioritisation of the new high school, and I will be throwing my support behind Buckie High.

"The report clearly states that the roof, the floors and the toilets of the current high school are at serious risk of imminent failure.

"Buckie needs a new high school as soon as possible and if elected this week, I’ll be fighting for that to happen.”

The by-election is due to take place this Thursday, with the count being held on Friday.

Also standing in the by-election are: Tim Eagle (Scottish Conservative and Unionist); Keighly Goudie (Scottish Labour Party); Neil Houlden; Les Tarr (Scottish Liberal Democrats).
