LOSSIEMOUTH High School made a very special delivery to one outstanding pupil recently after coronavirus forced its usual prize-giving and leavers ceremony off the calendar.

The school has sought out other ways to suitably mark the superb efforts of its pupils in place of the ceremony, which had been planned for Tuesday, June 23.

A special doorstep presentation to the winner of the school's Ramsay Macdonald Dux Medal, Thomas Letch (16), will go to make up one of the highlights in a virtual awards ceremony video being put together to celebrate pupils' progress throughout the school year.

Acting deputy head teacher Louise Petrie delivered the dux trophy in person to Thomas at his home in Lossiemouth's Stotfield Road on Wednesday, June 10.

In a socially distanced presentation, Ms Petrie rang the doorbell and left the trophy on the doorstep. Thomas was filmed opening the door and stepping outside to receive the accolade.

Guidance teacher Finn Mackie and chemistry teacher Dr Rob Campbell both described Thomas as an exceptional student.

The teachers said: "Thomas has demonstrated his leadership skills within his role as prefect and has deservedly earned his position of head boy for the new school year.

"Both academically and personally, Thomas sets himself goals which he achieves consistently and methodically.

"He has a good sense of humour and is extremely popular amongst his peers and teachers, striving always to offer support to others and to be a positive role model to younger pupils."

They added: "In S5, Thomas won awards for Higher Maths and Higher Biology, in addition to the dux award. He is very adept at communicating his thoughts and presenting his findings.

"He deserves every success in the future."

Ms Petrie said the presentation added some gravitas and formality to the occasion to mark Thomas's deserved win.

School staff are currently editing footage for the video, which will highlight many pupil successes and include speeches from head teacher Janice Simpson and a Police Scotland representative. The video will be released to pupils and parents on Thursday, June 25 through the Lossiemouth High School website.
