A SPEY Bay wildlife organisation's efforts to inspire youngsters were highlighted at the Scottish Parliament last week.

In a motion submitted on Thursday, Conservative Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston highlighted the work of Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) and the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) in setting up an Earth Guardians group at Spey Bay.

The activity group at the Scottish Dolphin Centre encourages youngsters to deepen their interaction with nature.

Mr Halcro Johnston said: "The Scottish Dolphin Centre, which is run by WDC, is a really interesting place to visit and the enthusiasm of the staff and volunteers there is infectious.

"It is a great showcase for our area and its success demonstrates the widespread and growing interest here in Moray in our natural environment, something I am sure that Earth Guardians will be able to tap into.

"Moray is one of the most beautiful places in Scotland and is rich in natural habitats and wildlife. And the coastline is a fantastic place to see sea birds, seals, dolphins and even whales.

"There is so much to experience and learn. I am sure that young people will be only too keen to get involved in the activities that Earth Guardians, with the support of WDC and the SWT, offers."

The centre said the mention was a fabulous commendation for WDC, its Scottish Dolphin Centre education officer and residential volunteers.

It added: "Our aim is to 'light that spark' of conservation in all the fabulous young people that join us."

Earth Guardians is held on the last Sunday of each month from May to October, between 2-4pm, and is aimed at nine to 13-year-olds. Themes and activities include wildlife photography, evolution and twilight walks. For more information call the centre on 01343 820339.
