A MORAY apprentice painter and decorator is celebrating a bumper 2019 after being named the best in Scotland.

Ythan Brannigan, who works for Hendersons and also served his time this year, took the accolade at the recent Scottish Decorators Federation Awards.

The Rothes company, which is celebrating its 48th year, was also Highly Commended for its work on the intricate restoration of the fire-ravaged Ballater Station.

That job took around seven months and was overseen by Andy Jackson, who was trained up through Hendersons before being promoted to a supervisory role.

Director Chris Henderson said: "We are delighted for them and the whole team.

"We noticed a few years ago that the workforce in our industry is ageing so we have been trying to bring in three apprentices a year so that in the long term we don't have a labour shortage.

"Ythan, who served his time in the summer after a four-year apprenticeship, has done really well and is a talented all-rounder. He can do anything from smaller work in someone's living room to really big jobs.

"It is the same with Andy. He was trained up through the company and is now a supervisor. "

Hendersons employs around 55 people in its painting and decorating department, which provides a range of industrial and domestic services.

The long-standing firm also has a cleaning division, bringing the total staff to around 80.
