The spirit of a young Elgin girl continues to sparkle six years after her untimely death.

To mark Abbie Main’s 21st birthday, a charity set up in her name held a ball that raised over £37,000.

Abbie died on Christmas day in 2017 after a long battle with cancer. The Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation was formed from Abbie’s wish to set up a charity to raise money “for hospitals and stuff”.

Around 200 people attended the Mansefield Hotel, where a raffle and an auction went a long way to raising £37,145 for the charity.

Local band, Diamond Skies, performed while compere George McNeil ensured the night went to plan. Rising West End star Carys Taylor sang a song from Abbie’s favourite musical Wicked, accompanied by an emotional slide-show of pictures of Abbie.

Abbie’s mother Tammy thanked all who were involved on the night. She thanked local businesses including Johnstons, Robertsons and Gordon and MacPhail for donating prizes.

Tammy, who is also manager of the charity, said that it’s “just fantastic” they still receive so much support after six years.

“I am overwhelmed by the continuous kindness and generosity of the community,” she said.

“They really take Abbie into their hearts.

“This event was only possible because of the fantastic support of local sponsors and businesses donating auction prizes and raffles, as well as our supporters who came and partied with us on the night.

“We ended up having a big bash for her birthday which I’m sure she would be proud of.”

In addition to Tammy, lead ambassador Christine Whitton helped organise the event, with support from Team Sparkle.

The money raised will go towards Abbie's Sparkle Bags and the Sparkle Lodge.

The Sparkle Bag is used to support children going through cancer treatment. The bags include a £100 voucher and are given out at Easter and Christmas.

Abbie’s Sparkle Lodge, located near Aviemore, is used by families whose children are affected by cancer. It gives families the opportunity to get away for an expense-free trip.
