A NUMBER of staff members at Tesco Extra in Elgin have tested positive for covid-19.

Tesco confirmed that a "small number" of staff have contracted the virus.

The store highlighted its coronavirus protocols, saying safety remains its "number one priority".

A Tesco spokesperson said: “A very small number of colleagues at our Elgin Extra store have tested positive for covid-19. Their close contacts have been informed.

"The safety of our colleagues, customers and suppliers remains our number one priority and we are working with local public health authorities, following all Scottish Government guidance, including when colleagues need to self-isolate, and taking the relevant precautions.

"We have extensive measures across all of our stores to help keep everyone safe, including protective screens at every checkout, a traffic light system at our store entrance monitoring numbers, social distancing signage and regular cleaning.”

Retail trade union Usdaw has called for the government to protect supermarket staff, and prioritise them for vaccination.

Paddy Lilli, Usdaw general secretary, said: “Retail staff are working with the public every day and are not only suffering increased abuse, but are also deeply worried about catching covid-19.

"That must be taken into account by the government when assessing risk levels and priority for vaccines and testing.

“We are calling on the government to ensure that retail workers and delivery drivers are given priority, because they provide the essential service of keeping the nation fed.

"We are also looking for support from the government, retail employers and the shopping public to help make food stores and deliveries as safe as possible for customers and staff alike.”
