First World War enthusiasts invited to engaging talk in Elgin on Australia's famous WW1 General Sir John Monash

HISTORY buffs and First World War enthusiasts are in for a treat with illuminating talk on one of the war's most distinguished commanders, Sir John Monash.

The talk, titled Sir John Monash: Australia's Famous WW1 General, will take place at Elgin Library on Saturday, September 23 at 1:30pm and will delve into the life and career of the renowned military leader.

Attendees can expect a comprehensive exploration of Monash's early life and education, including his profession as a civil engineer and his service as a militia officer before he embarked on his historic journey with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF).

The talk will be given by historian Paul Cobb, who has been researching WW1 and visiting the battlefields that defined the era for more than 50 years. With a rich history in the Western Front Association, including serving as Vice Chairman, he brings a wealth of knowledge and insights to his talks.

Mr Cobb is also the acclaimed author of the book Fromelles 1916, which tells the story of Australia's first battle on the Western Front during WW1. His extensive research and expertise make him a leading authority on the topic.
