A teenage motorist has appeared in court after driving straight over the top of an Elgin roundabout and crashing into an oncoming car.

Witnesses saw David Bremner's vehicle travelling very slowly through the town at about 5.30pm on Friday, May 12.

Procurator fiscal Karen Poke told Elgin Sheriff Court that an onlooker described the 18-year-old as "being all over the road".

At one point the apprentice plumber struck a bollard in the centre of the carriageway but did not damage it.

However when the teenager got to the edge of town and the A941 roundabout heading towards Rothes, instead of slowing down he drove directly over it.

The court heard that his vehicle was on the wrong side of the road when it hit the other car.

Ms Poke said: "The other driver tried to take evasive action but couldn't prevent the collision.

"On getting out of her car she noted that the accused appeared to be under the influence. She described his speech as being slurred and his eyes as glazed.

"When she spoke to him he apparently said he didn't even remember driving."

The police were called and found Bremner had just over an eighth of an ounce of cannabis upon him as well as 0.3grammes of cocaine.

He was taken to Elgin Police Station where he was given a breath test.

This recorded a reading of 27, which is only marginally over the drink-drive limit of 22.

Commenting on the case, Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood called it "surprising" that the police had only tested for alcohol.

Defence solicitor Grant Daglish said that, on the day of the offence, his client had been at college as part of his apprenticeship and had gone out with friends afterwards.

Mr Daglish added: "He's a young man who made a very foolish mistake.

"This had given him quite a stir. I don't believe we will see him in court again."

Bremner received a 12-month ban and a £1275 fine.
