A teenage girl has been charged with allegedly blackmailing a man online.

Police say that an 18-year-old man was the victim on a social media platform between August and November last year.

The 17-year-old girl, who is from the North East but cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to appear in court at a later date.

Detective Sergeant David Williamson from the police's cyber enabled crime team said: "Blackmail and extortion are common ways for people to make money out of their victims.

"Anyone threatened with online blackmail should never comply with it.

"We are committed to tackling this type of crime and anyone who feels at risk or worried should contact 101 or visit our website for tips on how to keep safe online."
