James Goodwin (4) was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy– a genetic condition which affects breathing, muscles and limbs – at just 10 months old and needs specialist medical equipment along with regular private physiotherapy sessions to be able to thrive and live his best, most independent life.

The team at Tesco – where James' mum Jessica is a colleague – have been doing their best to help support the family and have raised more than £600 through a prize tombola stall.

The fundraiser was headed by Tesco Community Champion Tracy Gourlay, who organised the tombola and took in donations from friends, colleagues and Tesco customers.

Tracy said: "I am constantly inspired by this wee hero due the bravery he shows with all the treatments he has to endure. He is the cutest, cheekiest wee monkey and never complains."

The money raised will go towards getting James a new wheelchair, ahead of him entering primary school later this year. The new wheelchair will replace his current one and has an electric add on which will help James to keep up with his peers out on the playground.

James' mum Jessica Goodwin said: "We are very grateful for the support Tesco have given us over the years since James diagnosis of Spinal Muscular Atrophy back in March 2020 – a week before the first national lockdown, when our lives changed forever as a family.

"Having a child with a complex medical condition does put a lot of financial pressure on us as parents so this help really is amazing and appreciated. It has allowed us as a family provide these significant mobility aids for James and we will always be extremely grateful to all who have helped us get to where we are now."
