Inverness has been voted Europe's best airport that has fewer than 2 million passengers per year.

The Airport Service Quality award is directly based on the customer satisfaction surveys filled in by about 370,000 travellers across the world’s airports.

Graeme Bell, Inverness Airport's general manager, said: "This award is particularly welcome because it is based on passenger feedback.

"We continuously look to respond to what our airport users tell us – and this was particularly important as we adapted to the changes in travel rules implemented during the pandemic."

Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) has Inverness as well as 10 other airports or landing strips across the north of Scotland.

Mr Bell said: "Everyone across the HIAL network made big sacrifices to ensure Scotland’s remote communities remained connected to the world and each other.

"That our work in Inverness has been recognised globally is testament to everyone’s efforts during the last two years. I want to thank everyone for their continued dedication."

Luis Felipe de Oliveira is the world director general of the Airports Council International which runs the annual awards.

He said: "After a second year of the pandemic, this year’s winners are especially reflective of customer experience leadership during the most challenging time in our sector’s history."

Other recipients included Prague and London City.
