People are being invited to “twin” their toilet at home or work with a public convenience.

The campaign is aimed at drawing attention to the estimated 2.4 billion people who don’t have access to a hygienic loo.

Holy Trinity Church in Elgin and St Margaret’s Church in Lossiemouth are behind the quirky initiative.

In return for a £60 donation, those interested get a Toilet Twinning certificate to hang on the wall.

Also on offer will be a photo and the exact GPS location of the twinned latrine – so you can a visit if you’re ever in the area.

About 60 per cent of all rural diseases are caused by poor sanitation.

One of the world’s biggest killers, it is said to claim the life of a child every minute.

The two churches are hoping to raise £300 in the run up to Easter Sunday on April 16 in order to build more public toilets.

Holy Trinity parishioner Judith MacIntyre said: “It’s a very simple and effective way to improve people’s lives.

“You don’t have to give as much £60.

“A donation of just £1 will make a big difference.

“It’s estimated that for every £1 spent on sanitation, there are £8 of savings from reduced health costs and increased productivity.”

A toilet-themed display is currently being held at the back of Holy Trinity.

The exhibition is open to the public every day.

This includes information about the campaign as well as gift aid envelopes.

Anyone who would like more information on the initiative is invited to contact church rector Christopher Ketley on 01343 547505.

Alternatively, more information can also be accessed online at toilettwinning.org
