Duncan was a popular figure in Elgin where he lived.

He died at home on February 8.

Jim Royan said Duncan was one of the best read people he had ever met.

"Duncan didn't have a TV in his house and was an avid reader," said the retired butcher.

"He was the sort of guy everybody knew and was a customer of mine. He would often just come in for a news.

"He could quote some of the great writers of our time and was an interesting guy. He was always up for a conversation.

Duncan, who lived in St John's Court, worked for many years as a civilian clerk at the Elgin Police Station.

"I knew Duncan from way back," added Jim. "His uncle and father had a tailor's shop in Commerce Street and his mother was a GP in Elgin."

Allan Duncan, of Elgin Cricket Club, said Duncan was a long time umpire for the club.

Paying tribute on the club's Facebook page, he said: "He was a fixture for the club, umpiring for many years. He was often down to watch us in the summer and always donated money to the club.

"A well known face around Elgin too, with his bike. He loved cricket and was involved in local rugby too."

Scott Campbell, a former player with Elgin CC and an umpire, said he had known Duncan well for more than 60 years.

His funeral service will be at William Watson Funeral Director’s, Blackfriars Road, Elgin on Thursday, February 23 at 1.30pm. All friends are invited to pay their respects.
