THE number of lives lost to coronavirus in Moray is now eight after two care home deaths last week.

Eight deaths Moray-wide means two people died in the area between April 27 and May 3. Both deaths occurred in care homes, adding to two deaths in hospital and four at home.

NHS Grampian, meanwhile, has recorded 30 new deaths, taking its total to 159.

There are now 42 confirmed cases of covid-19 in Moray, meaning one more case has been confirmed overnight, while Grampian's total is 957 – an overnight increase of 11.

The National Records of Scotland releases an update on deaths by health board and local authority at noon on a Wednesday, while the Scottish Government continues to release a daily update on case numbers by health board and local authority.

Moray continues to have fewer deaths and cases of covid-19 than any other mainland constituency in Scotland.

Neighbouring Aberdeenshire (pop: 261,500) has seen 88 deaths from 359 confirmed cases of covid-19, while Aberdeen City (pop: 227,500) has seen 63 deaths from 543 cases. Highland has 178 positive cases and 33 deaths (population 235,500).

Scotland-wide, 2795 people have died due to coronavirus since the outbreak began, according to NRS figures. That includes all deaths where coronavirus was mentioned on the death certificate, even if they person hadn't tested positive for the virus.

Of those deaths, 523 were recorded in the last week – a decrease on the 658 recorded the week prior.

The number of deaths in care homes decreased, too, from 339 to 310, but accounted for 59 per cent of all deaths across the country between April 27 and May 3.

Three quarters of those who have died have been aged 75 or older, with 52 per cent male and 48 per cent female.

The Scottish Government's daily update showed a total of 1703 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus. 65,125 people in Scotland have been tested through NHS labs, with 52,416 negative tests and 12,709 positive.
