PORTGORDON Fireworks Committee could be going out with a bang at their annual display.

The dedicated volunteer team are preparing to light up the sky on Friday, October 28 but it might be for the last time.

The annual spectacular has been a highlight in the calendars of locals since 1993, but diminishing numbers of volunteers alongside extra safety precautions could lead to the committee stepping back from the successful event.

Committee chairman Kenny Gunn said: “We are delighted to be back putting on our popular display, but I am sad to say that this may be our final year.

"Without younger volunteers we are struggling to meet the requirement level of people to form a new committee after this event. If this is something anyone would be interested in assisting with, please get in touch via our Facebook page.”

With people travelling from all across Moray and beyond, the event is set to bring thousands of people back to Portgordon for the first time since the pandemic. Held at the harbour, there will be a funfair, various food stalls and the ever-popular bottle stall.

The event will be open from 7pm, with the fireworks show beginning at 7.15pm. Entry to the show is by donation, our stewards will be wearing official fireworks high-vis vests and will have collection buckets for donations into.

In order to ease congestion Mayne's Coaches of Buckie have again offered to provide a Park & Ride scheme leaving from the Buckie Drifter car park at 6.15pm, stopping at Cluny Square at 6.20pm, Land Street at 6.25pm and finally Great Western Road at 6.30pm. After the display a coach will make a return trip leaving at approximately 8pm from Hope Street. The minimum fare is a £1 donation each way.

There will be parking available just off Reid Terrace for £2 per car, however there will have disabled parking signposted for blue badge holders near the west entrance to the harbour.

No other fireworks including sparklers, bikes or skateboards will be allowed on site, and children should be accompanied by an adult.

The committee have asked that those attending keep roads clear to allow for emergency vehicles other road users and service buses. Residents will be advised of any road closures and restrictions.

The team are also looking for volunteers aged 18 and over on the night to help with stewarding and collecting donations. Anyone interested should contact Mr Gunn on 07790 102551.
