No patients or members of staff were injured, but NHS Grampian said that staff were troubled by the incident.

"Thankfully neither patients nor staff were injured," the health board said.

"But it has left the team shaken up and has disrupted patient care while repairs are carried out."

Both SNP and Conservative councillors in the Keith and Cullen ward slammed the perpetrators.

"I was really disappointed to hear that a window had been deliberately broken at the Turner Memorial Hospital," SNP councillor Theresa Coull said.

"Whoever broke the window should be thoroughly ashamed of their action, which left the staff thoroughly shaken while carrying out their caring duties.

"It was by good luck that there were no staff or patients injured in this malice act. Vandalism is not acceptable in this town."

Conservative councillor Tracy Colyer added: "Wanton acts of mindless vandalism seem to be common occurrences in today’s society.

"But the community should not be complacent and accepting of this abhorrent lack of respected for people and property.

"Should anyone have any information regarding this deliberate damage to property that our community uses please contact the relevant authorities.

"Thankfully no staff or patients were injured but attacking the vulnerable in hospital is a very cowardly act."

Police are continuing to appeal for public help in tracing those responsible for causing the damage.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “At around 9.55pm on Thursday, November 17, police received a report of a vandalism at Turner Hospital in Keith. Enquiries into the matter are ongoing.

“Officers ask anyone with information, or if you believe you saw any suspicious activity in the area, to please come forward."

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident 3555 of November 17.
