A retained crew from the town was quickly on the scene around 4pm at Sunbank Park.

The former quarry area is popular with walkers.

A small area of grassland and trees was ablaze and the firefighters' main concern was preventing it spreading to nearby gorse bushes.

However, the prevailing wind was in their favour and enabled them to put out the fire with beaters and a super soaker-style backpack which holds around 25kg of water.

Once they gained access to the area with an appliance they were able to quickly dampen down the fire to prevent it reigniting.

The former quarry has been the scene of numerous fires over the years.

Every year the fire service locally and nationally puts out a message urging people not to light fires in the countryside and be careful when discarding cigarettes.
