WATCH: Ross hails Buckie Thistle cup heroics

BUCKIE Thistle's heroics in the Scottish Cup have been praised in the House of Commons.

Moray MP Douglas Ross has hailed the Jags' “outstanding efforts” against Celtic at Parkhead on Sunday, January 21 which, despite their gallant and gutsy efforts, saw them beaten 5-0 by the holders.

Mr Ross, himself a football referee of many years' experience told fellow MPs that despite the defeat the Highland League team had come away with a host of new fans because of what they achieved in this season’s competition.

In order to face Celtic in the fourth round, Graeme Stewart’s team had already beaten Tayport in round one, fellow Highland League side Forres Mechanics in round two and then Broxburn Athletic on penalties in round three.

Mr Ross said it had been “great” to see cup fever in Buckie and that the high-profile cup tie offered the chance to recognise such individuals like lifelong fan – 93 year-old Annie Jappy and long-time volunteer Sandra Paterson for all they have done for the club.

He continued: “I was delighted to be able to put on record in the House of Commons my praise for Buckie Thistle’s efforts in the Scottish Cup this season.

“While they may have lost 5-0 in Glasgow, Graeme Stewart, the players and the entire club can be hugely proud of how they represented themselves, the Highland League and the entire Buckie community both on Sunday and in the weeks leading up to the match.

“They have gained a host of new fans as a result and it was great to see cup fever grip Buckie in recent weeks.

“It was also fantastic that this cup tie gave the chance to recognise Buckie Thistle stalwarts like Annie Jappy and Sandra Paterson for all they have done for the club over the years and I was pleased to be able to give them both a mention in parliament.”
