WEST End Primary school pupil Ava Cant (8) got top marks from her class mates after winning a coveted writing competition.

The competition was organised by Inverness Museum and the prize was the visit of author Emily Dodd to the school to speak to all children from primary one to four.

Ava said all the pupils, herself included, loved Emily's visit. The primary three pupil was also given £25 worth of book tokens as part of her award.

To win the prize, Ava wrote a story about a baby dinosaur – and she enjoyed it so much so that she told the Northern Scot she wants to be an author in the future.

Mr Stuart McQuaker, head teacher at West End, was impressed with Ava's story, and the sense of initiative the youngster has used.

"It was something she did herself," he said. "We often recommend that pupils enter competitions, but she did this totally off her own back. We didn't put it to her in any way.

"The story she wrote was really good. It was about dinosaurs and there was a head teacher in it, who I hope isn't modelled off myself!"

McQuaker added the prize was impressive, and the pupils all enjoyed it: "Everyone from primary one to four really benefited.

"It was all very interactive and the pupils definitely enjoyed it more than my own assemblies," he laughed.

Ava added that her parents gave her a big "well done" on winning the award, which she was presented with by curator Alison Parfitt and librarian Sya Bruce.
