In 1809 work was well advanced on building the planned new village of Burghead.

During this much of what remained of the Pictish fort, which dates back to the 4th Century, was destroyed.

One problem encountered by the builders was locating a reliable source of fresh water.

A decision was taken to explore the local story of a lost well that had once formed part of the fort.

What the builders uncovered was one of the most mysterious places in Scotland.

A flight of 20 stone steps led down underground into a square chamber which measured about 16ft square and was cut into the natural rock.

.

Inside was a water tank fed from an underground spring.

While clearing out the chamber the builders recovered a stone with a bull carved upon it plus part of a Pictish stone cross

Even more peculiarly they also discovered a large cache number of Spanish coins.

These went missing some time afterwards.

This picture of Burghead Well was taken before lockdown by Tom McPherson who lives in Hopeman.
