Viewable from the A98 road towards Portgordon and Buckie, the two-storey building was constructed in 1834.

Timber-framed as well and clad, it was designed with overhanging eaves and balconies in the style of a traditional Swiss chalet.

The A-listed building was often thought to have been erected by the 4th Duke of Gordon, although some now suggest that his son, George, was responsible for its commission.

It was inhabited by the Reich family in the later 19th and 20th century, before being sold by the Crown Estate to Charles and Margaret Laing, who lived in the cottage from 1958 to 1995.

It was the subject of a £180,000 refurbishment about a decade ago.
