Jann Gray took this picture of the harbour in her home village – Portknockie.

.

The harbour was built in 1890 in answer to the so-called Herring Boom upon the continent, which saw the fish become regarded as a great delicacy, especially in Germany and Russia.

To help supply the highly lucrative trade a railway station was also built in Portknockie at around the same time.

Soon, some 150 fishing boats were based in the village and the local population swelled to 1300 people – almost the same number as live there today.

The First World War imposed a temporary halt to the trade until the hostilities has ended.

But the changed political situation abroad, especially in revolutionary Russia, signalled the start of the historical decline for Moray's herring fishing industry.
