12 year old Hannah Weir is staging a climate change protest outside the Moray Council Annexe, Elgin High Street on Friday.

Hannah Weir (12) is urging people to "fight for their futures" as she prepares to host a climate change protest outside Moray Council's headquarters on Friday.

The protest will take place from 11am to 1pm outside the council offices on the High Street, in Elgin, and Hannah wants you to be there.

Hannah is inspired by Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate change activist who, aged just 15, has brought climate change to the attention of youngsters globally and spoken with world leaders on the issue.

Speaking to the Northern Scot, Hannah said: "Greta Thunberg was a big inspiration for me. So many people took part in her protests and I wanted to show the Scottish government that we care.

"We want people to come and fight for their futures on Friday. Everyone is welcome to come, help and bring your own placards."

Hannah is currently unsure exactly how many people will turn up on the day but, although her mother Debi Weir says she will happily protest on her own, she hopes a good number come.

Mother Debi works for the council as a youth worker and is taking no part in the protest, but will support her daughter in any way possible.

"This has nothing to do with me," she said. "It's something she has become interested in and she has protested at school. She is constantly nagging her family to think more about the environment.

"I will give her a lift there on Friday but I won't be taking part in the protest."

Hannah, who is in second year at Speyside High, has walked out of maths class and held protests to show teachers she is serious – and has even been in touch with Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon.

She added: "I think the teachers realise it's serious and not just for a skive. I was planning to strike recently but was told I couldn't because of study leave.

"I wrote to Nicola Sturgeon because she declared a climate emergency but hasn't done anything. I was happy when she declared an emergency but it (the SNP's zero-emissions target) isn't until 2045. That's too late for my generation."

Hannah doesn't stop at climate change either, and is travelling out to India soon to help build a school and/or well for less fortunate children.
