Several readers have been in contact following an article published online yesterday about an American Mink spotted in Burghead.

The unanimous attitude among them is that the creatures – a non-native species first brought to these shores nearly a century – upset the local balance of nature.

Chris from Burghead writes: "Mink in the village and the surrounding area have been an issue for many years.

"Huge numbers were discovered there back in early 2019 by myself and through Scottish conservation organisations they are trapped in many parts of Moray using non-lethal means.

"Unfortunately it isn't possible to re-release them.

"The public need to be aware of the damage they cause to the local ecology as they will out-compete every other predator we have and will cause local extinctions."

Pete Rowberry lives in the Borders town of Duns, but saw the original article online.

He writes: "I have seen the devastation that mink cause, virtually wiping out water vole populations and feeding on chicks. This creature must be caught and removed from the wild."

In his message to us Robert Hood from Fochabers writes: "Mink are a major pest to other wildlife and must be controlled.

"A few years ago so-called animal rights activist broke onto a mink farm and let a large number escape. They wiped out a lot of poultry and wildlife. Also a lot of mink were killed on the roads."
