AS a sense of Christmas rapidly intensified, the final round of fixtures in the Moray Province Curling League before the festive furlough.

In Division 1’s table top clash it was Aberlour’s Andy Cameron who grabbed the biggest slice of cake with a solid 7-4 win over Alan Campbell.

Injury ruled out regular third player Gavin Cameron, but with a more than able substitute in Ben Rankin, the Aberlour success was based on multiple shot counts with the hammer and only giving up single shots on Campbell’s hammer.

The gap between these top teams is now just two points with Campbell just a short head in the lead.

The Forres club derby finished on the same 7-4 score as Charlie Watt Jr opened his presents early, racing to a 6-0 lead after four ends against Mike MacDonald.

MacDonald managed to claim his small portion of turkey over the latter ends to regain at least a touch of Christmas cheer.

Not much cheer for the Elgin Tennis Club lads as a Scrooge-like performance by Wilson Burnett resulted in an 8-0 shut-out for the Fochabers outfit.

Division 2 front runner Abby Duncan stashed away four more points in two games this week and remains unbeaten as he just edged clubmate Alan Durno in a 10-9 thriller.

Duncan got a bit of a fright with a loss of five shots at the second end, but it turned out to be merely a wake up call for his front three of Bill Ross, Tony Duncan and the ever reliable Gordon Fraser as they rallied to score seven shots over the next three ends and just hung on to the victory despite a Durno double at the last.

In their game against Bob Stewart, a count of six in the fourth proved to be the deciding score in a match that, apart from that, was just a trade in single shots as Duncan ran out a 9-3 winner.

Alan Durno’s second game of the week was a very friendly affair with neither the big Clochan farmer nor his hotel opponent Donald Ross able to dominate on a very keen sheet of ice.

Seasonal goodwill was in abundance as each team picked up single shots to shake hands on a 4-4 draw.

Moray Juniors’ Owen Watson dispensed anything but seasonal good cheer as Ben Rankin skipped the youngsters to a big win over Darnaway.

Alan Douglas scored singles in the opening two ends before the gluttonous Juniors ran riot to lead 8-3 after six ends and then added insult to injury with a count of four and then a steal of five to rack up a 17-3 victory.

With Alan Campbell leading Division 1, Abby Duncan at the top in two, Jim Gault unbeaten in Division 3 and Jodi Best just ahead in four, the season has reached the half way point and resumes in January after the Festive break.
